Sanford Health News won its first local Emmy, recognizing excellence in video storytelling in the upper Midwest.
Sanford Health News has been nominated six times for Midwest Emmys in the past three years. The award recipients were announced at a ceremony on October 14 in Minneapolis.
Winning a regional Emmy in the Military Content – Short/Long Form category is “Veterans, students revive wrecked 'cool bus.'” Journalist Matt Holsen and videographer Lonnie Nichols were nominated twice in this category this year.
The story follows Capt. Paul Weckman, chief of military and veteran affairs at Sanford Health, as he works with Southeast Technical College to surprise local nonprofit Wings of Valor with a new mode of transportation offered to them.
Sanford Health is dedicated to providing current and former military members with outstanding care and employment opportunities. Sanford works to support veterans and current military members with programs designed to meet their caregiving needs. These include Sanford Veterans Clubs at medical centers, a Veterans Ambassador Program and a Veterans Hotline. Sanford has also been recognized by the Military Times as one of the best employers nationwide for veterans.

Nichols and Holsen produced each story and were nominated by SHN director Ann Nachtigal and videographer Max Jensen.

The Upper Midwest Chapter, based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, represents local television and media production professionals from Minnesota, Iowa, western Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota.
