New Albany-based Midwest Metal Works is expanding operations in southern Indiana, One Southern Indiana (1si) announced late Thursday. The steel maker and fabricator plans to invest nearly $1.4 million to add new machinery and boost training to increase production, adding 12 jobs in the process.
Midwest Metal produces steel products for a variety of industries, including power plants, oil refineries and food manufacturers.
1si, the chamber of commerce and economic development organization for Clark and Floyd counties, says the new jobs will come with an average hourly wage of more than $42. The company currently has 11 full-time employees at an average wage of $37 an hour.
“We couldn't be more excited to expand our current operations,” Midwest Metal Works President Jeff Elzy said in a press release. “The increased growth we have seen over the years has led to this expansion and with the new equipment, we can now produce more for our current customers and increase our customer base to include companies currently looking outside of Indiana for their products.”
Indiana Economic Development Corp. has offered Midwest Metal Works up to $100,000 in conditional tax credits and up to $73,000 in production readiness grants. The company will not be eligible to claim the incentives until Hoosier workers are hired for the new jobs.
The city of New Albany has also offered personal and property tax abatements for the project.
“The City of New Albany was pleased to assist Midwest Metal Works in its expansion,” said Mayor Jeff Gahan. “It's great to see companies like Midwest Metal Works recognize the value of being here in our River City, and we're so proud they've chosen to expand to New Albany.”
