SSM Health St. Hospital Anthony Hospital – Midwest completes the completion of a new endoscopy clinic and outpatient facility in Midwest.
The additions are part of a $50 million effort to provide more convenient and comprehensive care to residents of the east Oklahoma City metro area following the April 2021 acquisition of Alliance Health Midwest Medical Center.
Stacy Coleman, president at SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital – Midwest, said that since the takeover, the hospital has focused on restoring the services that were once available, along with new diagnostic tools.
Additions in the past two years include 3D mammography machines, a new cancer center on the first floor, which opened in December 2022, and a new infusion clinic.
A new endoscopy unit dedicated to digestive health will open in late June or early July.
The eighth floor, scheduled to open in late July, will provide an additional 34 inpatient beds.
“We found that we needed to expand our capacity to be able to care for more people who need our services,” Coleman said. “We just want to make sure the community has the health care services they need and the community has the confidence in us to be able to take care of their needs.”
Coming out of the pandemic, Coleman said the hospital has seen a spike in demand for services. It said it has increased its staff to 230 active doctors to accommodate the increase and ensure it has the staff to provide a high level of patient care.
Improvements are also coming to the area around the facilities. Coleman said SSM Health has developed a partnership with the city of Midwest City to redevelop the area around the campus.
Coleman said it will be reminiscent of the revitalization of St. Anthony in Midtown Oklahoma City in the early 2000s.
Expanding cardiovascular services is also part of future plans, but no timeline has been set for the project, Coleman said.
While the pandemic has brought financial hardship to most health systems in the U.S., Coleman said SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital – Midwest had a strong first half of 2023.
“We will continue to grow and improve what we do so we can provide more care to those in the Midwest City community who need our services,” Coleman said. “We want people in this community to be able to stay in their community and get the health care needs they need.”
Coleman said SSM Health has a hospital in Shawnee and a remote location in Seminole, but recently, she has seen patients from those areas who need a higher level of care.
“We're trying to push our reach so we can take care of the people in the surrounding counties who need that care,” Coleman said. “We want to be that facility for them.”
