The project to renew the Medical Campus of the University Hospital of SSM St. Louis is the first new hospital built in St. Louis for nearly 100 years. The hospital has 294 private patient rooms, 16 operating rooms, five cardiac interventional suites, eight endoscopy suites and seven imaging/special procedure suites. The ER is built to accommodate 55,000 visits per year.
All this was entrusted to the architect Lawrence Group Architects and the contractor Alberici Constructors. To enhance safety, Alberici developed a pre-fabrication strategy highlighted by 297 patient bathrooms that were constructed in an off-site warehouse, transported to the site, lifted into the building and placed in place. In addition, hundreds of 10-foot-wide and 16-foot-high curtain wall modules were fabricated off-site and transported to the hospital as needed.
The team worked to ensure compliance with the budget, which included saving $1.5 million in steel scale-up costs through the early release of the steel design.
