“Expend your energy to find out what is the one thing you can agree on with a political enemy,” General Colin Powell told me years ago. “Think about it and you can do a lot.”We see this in evidence across the Midwest from Illinois to North Dakota, where unlikely allies with different interests and perspectives have come together to fight multiple multi-state carbon pipelines proposed by giant agri-food and fossil fuel companies. For some, it's as simple as private companies trying to take private land that belongs to someone else to make a profit for themselves. For others, pipelines will expand…

COLUMBUS, Ohio — President Donald Trump's name appears only once in Professor Jon Lauck's new book on perceptions of the Midwest as a “country beyond aircraft” and then only in a footnote featuring a Missouri poll .But the book's exploration of decades of historical trends helps explain Trump's electoral appeal to people who felt alienated from the political and cultural mainstream.”As the twentieth century dawned, the American Midwest stood tall as the rising and triumphant region of democracy—economically prosperous, politically formidable, culturally proud, and self-consciously regional,” Lauck writes in “From Warm Center to Ragged Edge: the Erosion of Lidestary and…

If Donald Trump ends up facing Joe Biden in 2020, will be displayed as a fight for the hearts and souls of white working-class voters in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and my home state of Michigan. But what do these workers want and need? The President and his allies on the right offer a mix of economic nostalgia, hardline nativism and trade wars. Many on the left (though not Biden himself) promise a guaranteed income for underemployed and unemployed populations. History at a glance Some parts of the upper Midwest are called “climate havens,” or areas that are less likely to suffer from extreme heat, sea level rise, and flooding as the Earth's temperature rises. Instead, they say, Americans must figure out how to make all parts of the country more resilient to the effects of climate change. As the effects of global warming become increasingly apparent, some cities are being…
