KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Dr. Deb Berkeyprofessor of physical education, is the recipient of the 2018 SHAPE America's Midwest Association for College and University Physical Education Scholar/Lecture Award.
Dr. Berkey has been at Western Michigan University for thirty-one years and currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the College of Education and Human Development in instructional methods and strategies, curriculum and motor development, and has coordinated the professional physical education teacher preparation program. She has served in leadership roles at WMU, several professional physical education organizations, and the Michigan Department of Education, in addition to her roles as a professor and researcher. Her current research focuses on remote supervision of interns using FaceTime and iPads.
Dr. Berkey was selected for this award because of her impressive credentials, expertise, passion and service to the field, and the impact she has on her students, colleagues and community. The award will be presented at the SHAPE America National Conference in Nashville in the spring.
SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators) is a professional organization that helps define excellence in the field, provides support to health and physical education educators, and school health and physical education advocates at the state and national levels so that all children are ready to lead healthy, physically active lives. The MACUPE Award is presented to a female member who has demonstrated distinguished service in health, physical education, recreation, dance and/or athletics at the college level.
