Ethanol producer Valero Energy is joining a major Midwest carbon dioxide pipeline network, pushing the $8 billion project forward.
Summit Carbon Solutions announced Monday that eight Valero ethanol plants will supply captured CO2 to the development, which is set to transport and store emissions from nearly 60 facilities in five states. The CO2 would be sequestered deep underground in North Dakota.
The addition of Texas-based Valero — a huge producer of fuels and other products — adds momentum to a project aimed at helping decarbonize the Midwest's concentrated ethanol industry. Summit and Poet — the nation's largest biofuel producer — announced a partnership in January which integrates 17 plants into Summit's proposal.
The project is intended for parts of Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota.
