Midwest Games, a Wisconsin-based video game publisher with a focus on the region that launched earlier this year, successfully secured $3 million in funding with a little help from a huge neighbor.
The successful funding round was led by venture capital firm TitletownTech, an organization created by a partnership between the Green Bay Packers and Microsoft. Participation came from Tundra Angels, Brightstar Wisconsin, Wisconsin Investment Partners, gaming and entertainment personality Erin Ashley Simon and Bay Tek Entertainment owner and CEO Larry Treankler, whose properties include Skee-Ball;
Midwest Games was founded by Wisconsin native Ben Kvalo, whose experience in the gaming industry came from roles with 2K, Blizzard Entertainment and Netflix. Kvalo traded the West Coast for a return home with his own vision to support the region's video game industry and developers by creating his “one-of-a-kind publisher,” which is based in Green Bay at the offices of TitletownTech, just two minute walk to iconic Lambeau Field.
Kvalo said, “At Midwest Games, we are dedicated to bridging the gap and creating opportunities for underserved communities in the gaming industry. As we continue to emphasize, great games come from anywhere, and we're deeply committed to empowering regions like the Midwest.
“Our partnership with TitletownTech and the support of our investors, including Erin Ashley Simon, and our myriad local supporters reinforce our determination to break down barriers to entry and provide access to a wide range of talent. We believe that games are a universal language, a great equalizer, and through our efforts, we are shaping a more inclusive and vibrant gaming ecosystem.”
The funding announcement comes shortly after Midwest Games revealed its first title: RA RA BOOMa 2D beat'em up genre developed by Cincinnati-based Gylee Games that adopts a hand-drawn art style and supports four-player co-op.
Midwest Games aims to invest in team expansion and fund and support independent developers in the region, reflecting its desire to give back to the large number of Wisconsin-based backers who provided investment. It will specifically seek to fund “innovation in areas often overlooked by the mainstream gaming industry” while “expanding opportunities for underrepresented talent and communities” in the creative realm.
TitletownTech Partner Cordero Barkley said, “We are excited to invest in Midwest Games and believe the organization adds significant value to the gaming industry, the Midwest and our local community. We appreciate the disruptive potential of Ben's vision and support his positive impact on the gaming ecosystem and beyond.”
Investor Erin Ashley Simonwho also co-owns esports and entertainment company XSET, said: “I am thrilled to be a part of Midwest Games, a company that shares my passion for creating opportunities and revenue streams in the gaming industry that have never existed before.
“Ben Kvalo's focus on areas that often lack opportunities for underserved communities resonates deeply with my personal and professional mission. As a woman of color, I believe in opening spaces and creating access for all. Midwest Games provides access to long-overlooked talent, and I look forward to breaking down those barriers together and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate and succeed in this exciting industry.”
