Midwest School has operated on an alternate calendar — four days a week — for six years.
But that requires some bureaucratic tweaks every two years because Midwest's calendar operates on a schedule of fewer than 175 school days and/or fewer than those 185 teacher contract days in a school year — a different system than other schools.
Last April, the Natrona County School District board heard about Midwest's alternative calendar, which was then approved by the Wyoming Board of Education.
Midwest — with grades K through 12 — tweaked that alternative calendar, and the board approved it at its meeting Monday.
The Midwest calendar enhancement changed the start and end dates for the 2023-2024 school year to conform to the school district's calendar.
Classes will start on August 28th and end on May 31st.
The sophisticated calendar it does not change the number of days and hours of teaching.
Overall, the calendar shows classes for four days a week with a “Focus Friday” once a month to meet with students who need help.
The four-day-a-week program has been successful, with former principal Chris Tobin saying last year that it gives students motivation to complete homework and better opportunities to participate in sports.
