The United States it is home to many different regions and subregions, and there is plenty of debate about which region certain states belong to.
The US Census Bureau has used the same regional definitions since 1950.
The bureau divides the US into four regions – Northeast, Midwest, South and West – and nine subregions.

But it is not always clear where one region ends and another begins. There is no consensus on whether the Dakotas are part of the Midwest, for example, or whether Arkansas belongs in the South.
Fortunately, we have the US Census Bureau, which has been classifying American regional subdivisions for over 100 years. From the 1950 Censusthe bureau has used its same arrangement four main districts and nine sub-districts. The only changes occurred in 1960, when Alaska and newly added Hawaii joined the Pacific region, and in 1984, when the North Central region was renamed the Midwest.

The Northeast includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
New England consists of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
The Mid-Atlantic section consists of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
The next census region is the Midwest. It consists of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas.
The East North Central consists of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Illinois.
The West North Central region includes Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas.
The third region, the South, claims more states than any other region. According to the Census Bureau, the South consists of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma.
Washington, DC is also included in the South.
The South Atlantic division includes Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, as well as Washington, DC.
The East South Central region includes Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi.
The West South Central region includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.
The West consists of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii.
The Mountain Division consists of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada.
The Pacific Division consists of California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii.
